Michelangelo Puliga

Chief Scientist
Chief Data Scientist
IMT, Institute for Advanced Studies, Lucca

I'm a Physicist with a passion for datascience and ICT. From the years of first Linux distributions I've started coding in Python,C  joining the OpenSource movement, making web applications and playing with Javascript visualisations. I've made a Phd in Engineering studying the statistical distributions for extreme events in Hydrology Then I've moved to Zurich ETH (Swiss Federal institute of technology) where I was involved as Postdoc Researcher in the Forecasting of Economic European project (FOC). With Stefano Battiston and Guido Caldarelli we created a network tool to measure the distress of the financial market. The DebtRank measure is nowadays part of a tool used by the Central Banks to measure the expected loss in a network of assets/liabilities links among Banks.

After the experience in Zurich I moved back to Italy, Lucca in the  IMT High Studies institute where, in the AXES unity I studied mostly data science for economics and social network analysis publishing papers with Massimo Riccaboni, Zhen Zhou, Alessandro Chessa and Guido Caldarelli and others. We published papers on financial networks introducing the Accounting network concept: a new way to use the data in the financial statements to cluster and study the financial institutions. Meanwhile, with the Linkalab team we explored the technologies related to social networks (Twitter and Facebook), cloud and BigData. We are currently using Spark and S3 to process a large amount of data.
For the future, I foresee the usage of AI tools for data analysis, smart clouds and IoT with challenges of privacy, security and computing structures.
